Help! I think my bamboos are dying! 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Hi!
I'm am completly new to bamboo but I have been searching where to buy a plant for interior use here in Puerto Rico and I haven't been able to. Finally I met a person who had bamboos in his back yard. They are not the giant type that grow wild near the rivers here in Puerto Rico. I know this because the plant is mature (I am assuming this by the many years it's been planted there) and the highest culms I see are about 10 feet high. So I dug up a few of the roots (which I now know are called rhyzomes) but since I didn't know much, I don't know if I took enough. I took out like 6 or 7 clumps and planted them in pots. Since I didn't know the rhyzomes were dry for about 10 minutes while I drove to my house. Now it's been about a week and only 1 of those 6 or 7 plants has green waxy leaves. The others have curled up and are kinda dry although the remain a pale green color. After I swa their reaction I have done some research to see what I can do but I am still not sure. I read that I could cut the culms to a lower size but I wouldn't like to do that because I want to retain the hieght that the culms have (6 feet). The thickest culm is aroung .25". I also read that I could pluck out the leaves (which for me is a more desireable thing) but, how would I know if they are going to make it? Please HELP ME!!! I don't want to lose them!! What can I do to help them. I put a fertilizer 15-50-5 to see if it helped and a few leaves got better.

Thanks in advanced!!

I think you will probably have to cut back the culms on the plants with the damaged leaves. They may not have enough rhizome in the soil to supply nutrients and water to the entire culm. You can just keep watering and babying the plants and they may recover as the rhizome grows, but they may recover faster if you cut them back.
