I have used a front end loader in the past to split out part of very large clumps to start new clumps. Basically we selected 2 bamboo culms near the edge of the clump and dug with shovels to expose the rhizome. We also used water hoses to rinse away some of the dirt to make it easier to see the rhizomes. We cut the rhizome section then used the front end loader to lift and carry the culms with rhizomes attached to the new location. Worked well with 2 people.

I know propagation of bamboo by whole culm burial works well with B. multiplex varieties. I have done plenty of Silverstripe and Alphonse Karr this way.

I think it's ok to do so, but you should be careful in doing it!
