TOPIC: Bamboo Pruning and maintenance

Bamboo Pruning and maintenance 3 years, 10 months ago #47

I just acquired some property that has a couple of large bamboo clumps. Im not sure what kind of bamboo they are but they are about 30ft tall and the clumps are about 12 feet across. They are beautiful and I really want to maintain them this way. What kind of routine maintenance or pruning do they need? What should I look for to make sure the bamboo clumps stay healthy?

Your bamboo really should not need very much maitenance. You can cut out any culms that look unhealthy. You can also cut older culms that appear to be in the way of new shoots if you want. It sounds like the bamboos are healthy and you like the way they look, so I really would recommend just letting them go. If any new shoots come up any place you don't like, just cut them off and eat them. Most of the time health bamboos don't really need pruning. Sometimes people prune culms or limbs to make the bamboo have a certain look, but it is not required for the health of the plant.

5、 Life isn't like a box of chocolates. It's more like a jar of jalapenos. What you do today, might burn your butt tomorrow.
