TOPIC: Growing bamboo in the shade

Growing bamboo in the shade 3 years, 10 months ago #40

I have an area in my backyard that is very shady, but I would like to plant bamboo in an opening between some trees. Will the bamboo grow well in the shade? Should I select a vartiety more suited for shade?

Most varieties of bamboo will grow well in the shade. They may not grow as fast as in full sun though. Taller bamboos planted in the shade, can actually grow tall enough to reach more sunlight as they mature. Some of the smaller bamboo varieties will grow a bit taller in the shade and have fewer leaves near the bottom of the plant and more near the top. This can be quite beautiful. Try to select a spot that gets some patches of sunlight during the day, for optimum growth.
