TOPIC: Hurricane Protection

Hurricane Protection 1 year, 8 months ago #160

Does anyone have any suggestions or information as to what species of bamboo would offer the most protection against hurricane force winds and/or how thick of a hedge would be required to get a reasonable amount of protection from such strong winds?

That is an interesting question. Back in 2004 when Charley, Frances and Ivan wreaked havoc on Florida I saw quite a bit of bamboo damage from the high winds. While I know bamboo flexes in the wind, I'm not sure that a thick bamboo hedge would offer protection from such strong winds.

Where are you located in Florida?

We had a pretty wicked storm blow through Jacksonville today. i snapped some pics of the Mutabilis and a few other bamboos getting blown around by the gale force winds. I guess more of an answer to your question is that bamboo would probably nor provide much protection from hurricane force winds unless the home was surrounded on all sides by several acre bamboo forest.
